Hi ,

The Bristol & Beyond Early Years Stronger Practice Hub is funded by the DFE and is providing evidence-based CPD, focused on those working and caring for early years children. In this special Maths-focused edition of our newsletter, we'd like to share upcoming training opportunities, Maths-related blogs, and resources. We've also got an incredible giveaway for UK primary schools with a nursery class.

But, first... A very special event...

Dr Helen J Williams is an independent consultant specialising in the learning and teaching of early mathematics. She is a founder member of the Early Childhood Mathematics group. Her book “Playful Mathematics for Children 3 to 7” was published in 2022 and won the Nursery World Professional Book of the Year Award.

Helen will be joined in conversation by other local Maths specialists, including Robin Taylor, Julian Swindale and Zoi Chambers who will share their knowledge and experiences in schools and settings and bring the research to life. Together they will explore how children learn best, how adults can best support children’s mathematical learning, and identify the sweet spot between adult guidance and child play and agency.

      More from Helen Williams....

Helen has written a Blog for the Stronger Practice Hubs on:

Subitising – what it is and why it is important for early mathematics.

As well as breaking down subitising, Helen also reinforces others research that has found that "guided play rather than free play or direct instruction, is the most effective pedagogy for early mathematics, providing a ‘powerful vehicle’ for early mathematical learning."

      More from Julian Swindale.....

Julian Swindale has written two articles for the ATM Journal recently. In them he explores a cycle of mathematical activity in his early years setting.

      • The Montessori cycle of activity and learning in mathematics: Part 1 Rugs and study boxes.
      • The Montessori cycle of activity and learning in mathematics: Part 2 Study rugs

Early Mathemathics in the Early Years Evidence Store.....

In this blog Julian Grenier highlights two practices for developing children’s early understanding of numbers from the Early Years Evidence Store.
